April 5 – Barcelona, Spain

The last time we were in Barcelona was in 1995.  It is a great city and worth more than one visit.  We decided to not do a tour but just wander on our own.  The first thing we did was catch a taxi to the Sagrada Familia, the great cathedral, designed by Antoni Gaudi and under construction for almost 150 years.

The lines, both for tickets and to get in, were horrendous but we found a tour group with skip the line tickets and were able to get in at noon (instead of 2:00).  The last time we were here there was no roof on the cathedral.  However, a few years back they started charging admission instead of asking for donations.  This has given them a huge influx of money and the construction is moving along rapidly.  The inside is all done except for the floor.  The goal is to complete the entire project in June, 2026 for the anniversary of Gaudi’s death.

It is a spectacular and fanciful building, both inside and out. Our guide said that all of the statues were modeled after local people, including a potato seller. And the model for the Baby Jesus on the Nativity facade was a baby girl.

The interior is not as ornate as the exterior but is equally as fanciful and breathtaking. The columns are modeled after tree...mostly palm trees. And the stained glass is truly beautiful.

The fanciful outside, with it's beautiful towers…

and interesting sculptures...

is nearing completion with work going on on the last, central spire.

The inside is much simpler and less ornamented than the exterior but is majestic and beautiful.

The columns that hold up the building are designed to look like trees.

The stained glass is not the original as the original was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930’.  The windows are very different from other cathedrals we have seen around Europe in that they have a very modern feel.

After enjoying the cathedral we caught another taxi for the Picasso Museum.

There was a large section of works that Picasso did based on Diego Velaquez' work Las Meninas (The Ladies in Waiting).  They posted the work by Velaquez...

He did several studies of just individual subjects from the original painting.  They all seemed to be in very different styles.

From there we wandered the Barre Gothic...

where we stopped to see the Cathedral of Barcelona.

Then it was on to the Old City.

We seemed to stumble across some very interesting modern art installations around the city.

A long and exhausting day wandering the city but we both very much enjoyed coming back to Barcelona.  However, as usual, we have not yet been able to finish seeing everything in the city so we will likely need to come back.  Maybe after the Sagrada Familia is completed.
