March 18, 19 and 20 - Cruising the South Atlantic Ocean

We celebrated a late St. Patrick’s Day on Monday (18th).  There were green and white balloons at some of the venues and we had a phenomenal special show that night.  The ship’s ensemble, show band, the dance duo, the violinist, and many others put together a really great show.  Lots of energy and lots of Irish dancing.

On the 19th we had more great lectures.  One was St. Brendan and some monks in the 6th Century who, according to an old Irish legend, built a leather boat and sailed to America.  Scientist Tim Severin and his colleagues decided to try to repeat the voyage.  Mr. Severin gave a lecture and showed a documentary about this effort.  They went to a lot of work researching how the boat was likely built and tried to use all of the same methods that would have been used to build it the same way. The lecture and film ended when they reached Iceland.  The rest of the tale will be told another day.

The other major lecture was entitled “President Trump”.  It was heavily attended and the presentation was pretty balanced.

Tonight’s (19th) entertainment was classical pianist Rustem Hayroudinoff…a great concert.

On the 20th, still at sea, we had another round of great lectures including one on St. Helena, final home of Napoleon.  The other topic was on the current political realignment that is going on the America.  The presenter was Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer prize winner and frequent contributor on MSNBC.  In discussions with friends afterwards we all felt he did a pretty balanced job on a very difficult and divisive topic.  Others were overheard complaining about his blatant liberal bias against Trump (must have been Trump supporters).
